{"id":84,"date":"2020-11-03T20:57:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T20:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gbcplayers.uk\/?page_id=84"},"modified":"2020-11-11T19:17:59","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T19:17:59","slug":"other-entertainment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.gbcplayers.uk\/?page_id=84","title":{"rendered":"1940&#8217;s Other entertainment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It\u2019s perhaps worth reminding ourselves what entertainment was available at this time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">BBC radio was king, broadcasting the Light Programme, the Third Programme and the Home Service (which eventually became Radio 2, 3 and 4).&nbsp;&nbsp;TV didn\u2019t start broadcasting reliably until 1948, and there was only one black and white channel, with perhaps one twentieth of the picture quality we now have.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, there were only 15,000 households in the whole country with a TV set, so Grenoside might therefore have had one or two<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There were only a few hours of programmes per day, ending at 11pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;Programmes also stopped between 6pm and 7pm, to allow children to be put to bed, the so-called \u201cToddlers\u2019 Truce\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;ITV started in 1955; BBC 2 in 1964; colour TV in 1969, and Sky in 1989<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><!-- Flickr Justified Gallery Wordpress Plugin by Miro Mannino -->\n<div id=\"flickrGal0\" class=\"justified-gallery\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/grenosidepanto\/50568541253\/in\/set-72157716847233062\/lightbox\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Early TV family\"><img alt=\"Early TV family\" src=\"https:\/\/farm66.static.flickr.com\/65535\/50568541253_675f2f282d.jpg\" data-safe-src=\"https:\/\/farm66.static.flickr.com\/65535\/50568541253_675f2f282d.jpg\" \/><div class=\"caption\"><div class=\"photo-title photo-title-with-desc\">Early TV family<\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">How about local cinema?
