In Edward Percy’s play, a criminal called Descius Heiss settles in London to provide security for his daughter Margaret, who does not know of her father’s past. Ostensibly, he runs an antique shop, but is actually buying and selling stolen jewels on the black market. Archie Fellows, his ambitious shop assistant, finds out and blackmails him. Unable to cope, and fearing that his daughter may discover the truth, Heiss murders his assistant, then kills himself
