Henry Hobson (Jonathan Hester) runs a boot business in Salford, in Harold Brighouse’s play. He is overbearing, controlling, and a drunk. His eldest daughter Maggie (Deborah Hester) decides to marry the skilled Willie Mossop, one of Hobson’s boot-hands (John Otter). Her business acumen and stubbornness plus Willie’s skill mean that they take away Hobson’s trade and become a successful business. When Hobson’s drinking gets out of control, the previously timid Willie offers to come back if Hobson agrees to make him a partner. Hobson must be a sleeping partner only.
