The Helen Jerome play follows Jane (Jenny Jones) from birth through her troubled childhood with her cruel aunt, Mrs. Reed. She is sent away to the bleak Lowood School but becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, the home of the mysterious Edward Fairfax Rochester (Mark Winton). But what is his secret? Jane grows close to Rochester but when she discovers that his insane wife, Bertha (Jane Challenger), is locked in an upstairs room, she abandons him. However, she feels Rochester’s call in her heart and returns to find him blind amongst the ruins of his burned out house
The Centre’s electric piano was used on stage at one point. It was produced by Lesley Vere, assisted by Nicola Lacey. Daniel Hines built the set, but it seems to be his last involvement, after 13 years
