1981-05 (GCP) The Happiest days of your life

John Dighton’s play is set in September 1949, and confusion reigns when St Swithin’s Girls’ School is accidentally billeted at Nutbourne College, a boys’ school….  Two simultaneous tours of the school premises are arranged: one for the girls’ parents, and a separate one for the governors, and never the twain must meet!

Peter Race apparently played Headmaster Godfrey Pond as a cross between Ken Dodd and Dick Emery! And Tony Wood had the audience in stitches as the mincing clergyman Rev Edward Peck. The first night audience was much reduced as it coincided with a one-day bus strike!

This is our second favourite play (“When we are Married” is the most popular)

Chris Jackson plays Hopcroft Minor. His “future” son Oliver will play the same role in 2018

Julie Wood produced the play, making her our youngest ever producer. Alistair Codona joined and will stay for 7 years, although it’s the last appearance for Marjorie Portman, who’d done Wardrobe for the last 10 years

Kath Brewster allegedly made gym slips for the three men specially short to show their legs to advantage!
