This seems to be when GDS was formed. Something must have gone wrong, though, as it was subsequently “revived” in November 1950
Back in 1948, it was seen that nearby villages had cinemas, scouts and guides etc, but Grenoside had nothing. The Methodist church had children’s plays, directed by a Mr Brown, who lived on Wheel Lane. There were also festivals of one-act plays at St Marks in Malin Bridge, where Grenoside attended along with Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green
The first productions seem to have been run by John Houldsworth, of the Post Office, his mum Ida Dronfield, and Phyllis Wasteney. The productions were “Jan of Windmill Land” and “Zurika the Gypsy Maid”. Joyce Duff played Jan in the first one
